Aboriginal Animal Paintings
The fourth grade was introduced to Aboriginal art from Australia. They looked at many different paintings and observed the characteristics of all the paintings. They then chose an animal native of Australia as the subject of their painting.
Snowmen at Night
The fourth grade came up with some very creative snowmen designs. They drew their snowmen with glue first and then used chalk pastels to shade their artwork. Students really seemed to enjoy working with the chalk for this project!
Navajo Blanket Weaving
The 4th grade has taken a break from their macchia bowls while they were fired in the kiln and began another Chihuly inspired project…..Blanket weaving! Dale Chihuly was inspired by Navajo blanket weaving and incorporated this design into his glass bowls. Because of this the fourth grade has been working on some blanket weaving of their own. Students precisely measured their loom and cut strips of patterned paper to weave. Some students chose to incorporate ribbon into their design as well.
Chihuly Inspired Macchia Bowls
The fourth graders are excited to be working on their clay macchia bowls! In preparation for this project we have been learning about Dale Chihuly, a glass artist, who has some amazing work! Students have enjoyed learning about the different glass sculptures that he has created, as well as, the process of blowing glass.
Students had lots of fun learning how to make their clay slab bowl. Everyone was VERY excited to use the clay! After a week of drying, their macchia bowls were fired in the kiln. Student then chose a speckled glaze for the outside and a solid color for the inside. They will have to be fired one more time before the bowls are finished!

4th Grade Art
GRE’s artists have had a great start to the school year breaking in the art room! After learning about being Art SmART, taking an art room tour and making portfolios to keep our projects in students were very excited to begin their first art project! This year our theme is “Once upon a time every famous artist was a child” so our first projects were based on books.
The fourth graders read a very cool art book called No One Saw: Ordinary Things Through the Eyes of an Artist. The students have been practicing pronouncing the artists names and learning what they saw like no one else. Ask your child which artists and pictures they remember! Students also created their own pictures of things that they see like no one else.
