1st Grade Self Portraits
The first graders learned that a portrait is a picture of a person and a self portrait is a picture of them! They then practiced drawing their facial features before painting their very own self portrait. This was quite a challenge since drawing eyes, noses, and mouths can be tricky, but they came out with some awesome portraits. We hope that you enjoy them as much as the students enjoyed making them!
Owl Drawings
I was SO impressed with all of the first grade owl drawings! At the beginning of this project many students said that they did not know how to draw an owl, but using letters from the alphabet we created some very cute owl drawings. Ask your first grader if they remember the letters we used to draw our owls!
Gingerbread Scene
After reading the book, Gingerbread Friends, students created their own snowy scene and gingerbread architecture. Students loved decorating their gingerbread house and dressing up their gingerbread boy or girl. Students were very creative with their designs and SO excited to take them home for winter break to share with their families!
Jasper Johns & Color Mixing
In first grade we have been learning about a famous artist named Jasper Johns! Students learned about the five things that he always painted…Flags, maps, targets, numbers and letters. Students then used letters to create their name, nick name or a favorite word. We then painted them in the style of Jasper Johns with two of the primary colors….RED, YELLOW, BLUE. Students discovered that mixing the primary colors makes the secondary colors!
Kente Cloth
In first grade we are learning about art from another country! Students were introduced to Kente Cloth, which is a fabric that people weave in Ghana. The students have been looking at the colors, lines, shapes, and patterns used in the Kente Cloth designs. We also read a book called Kente Colors to learn about the special African meaning of each color. Students then created their own paper “loom” and learned how to weave using paper!
1st Grade Art
GRE’s artists have had a great start to the school year breaking in the art room! After learning about being Art SmART, taking an art room tour and making portfolios to keep our projects in students were very excited to begin their first art project! This year our theme is “Once upon a time every famous artist was a child” so our first projects were based on books.
First graders read one of their favorite books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We learned how Eric Carle makes his own paper and then made our own painted paper for our caterpillar bodies. We also learned about recycled paper to use for our leaves. Students have been working hard finishing their very own hungry caterpillar pictures.
