Heart Design Prints
The second graders have been busy learning the process of printmaking using hearts as their subject matter. First they came up with practice sketches. Then they transferred their favorite sketch to their printing plate. Then they learned to use a brayer to apply ink and print three of their designs.
Unfortunately there are not any pictures of the printmaking process since it is quite messy and Miss McWilliams had ink all over her hands : ) Make sure to ask your 2nd grader about it!

Second Grade Starry Nights
The second graders were introduced to Vincent van Gogh and some of his most famous artwork. We then looked at his style of painting with small lines and thick brushstrokes. The students then recreated their own version of Starry Night. We used oil pastels to make small lines to create the swirly sky and bright stars and then painted the rest with water colors. Students learned how to draw three dimensional houses to finish their town under their starry sky.

If You Were a Tree What Tree Would You Be?
Second graders are observing how different artists interpret what trees look like. They then practiced drawing their own trees and learned about silhouettes. Students created a watercolor background of the warm colors or the cool colors to create a sunset or night sky. They then painted a silhouette of what kind of tree they would be if they were a tree. We also read a poem to brainstorm what kind of tree they may want to be...
If you were a tree,
What tree would you be?
Would you be tall, short, or a stump?
Would your bark be smooth or have a big lump?
Would your branches stretch out and reach for the sky?
Would your branches made a shady space to lie?
Would you grow in the forest, the beach or the park?
Would animals come sleep on you when it got dark?
Would you be a tree in the spring, summer, winter or fall?
Would you be home to animals big and small?
When December came what if you got chopped down?
Would you be happy or have a big frown?
So before you paint, tell your answer to me,
If you were a tree, what tree would you be?

Where the Wild Things Are
The Wild Things have taken over the second grade! After reading the book Where the Wild Things Are, we discussed characteristics of “wild things” and how they were similar and different. Students were challenged to create their own wild thing using the characteristics that we discussed. We then filled the bodies of our wild things with lines and patterns before painting them with warm and cool colors!
2nd Grade Art
GRE’s artists have had a great start to the school year breaking in the art room! After learning about being Art SmART, taking an art room tour and making portfolios to keep our projects in students were very excited to begin their first art project! This year our theme is “Once upon a time every famous artist was a child” so our first projects were based on books.
Second graders loved the book Mouse Paint and have been creating their own little mouse painters while learning about different color groups. Ask your child if they can tell you about the primary colors, secondary colors and complimentary colors!
